Villarreal of Spain winger, Samuel Chukwueze’s late equalizer that helped his side send Bayern Munich of Germany out of this season’s UEFA Champions League has gone viral on social media.
Megasportsarena.com reports that several websites, blogs and platforms went agog with comments, posts, facts, statistics and photographs to herald what would go down in history as one of the most dramatic goals ever.
With Chukwueze’s goal taking Villarreal through to the semi-finals for only the second time in their history, the dazzling lad was bound to steal all headlines later same night, with British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Super Sport cable television channel, uefa.com and cafonline all not left out.
Among the lot, BBC Sport noted: “There wasn’t just drama in Madrid! 🤯 Samuel Chukwueze’s 88th-minute goal saw Villarreal into the Champions League last four for the first time in 16 years, at Bayern Munich’s expense!”
SuperSport added: “One of Nigeria’s finest! 🇳🇬 Samuel Chukwueze comes off the bench to finish a swift counterattack for Villarreal🔥”
The post from @PoojaMedia stated: “Nigerian boy, Chukwueze 🇳🇬 knocked Bayern out of the Champions League. His name in the history books. Naija to the 🌍.”
The post by @CAF_Online reads: “🇳🇬 LIVE footage of Chukwuwze Onye Ball! 🤩 Naija, stand up for the Star boy! 🕺.”
The spree was ignited after the Super Eagles’ star, who featured as substitute during the first leg 1-0 win in Spain, turned up as hero of the night for The Yellow Submarine on Tuesday night.
Megasportsarena.com reports further that the Chile 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup gold medalist and third highest scorer got the decisive equaliser two minutes to full time and sealed a 2-1 win on aggregate.
Chukwueze was a late substitute for Villarreal at Allianz Arena in Munich, just as it had been during the first leg at Estadio La Ceramica last week Wednesday when he replaced Nigerian-born Dutch international, Arnaut Danjuma, who scored Villarreal’s lone goal in that game.
The left-footed product of Diamond Football Academy of Umuahia hit home barely four minutes after going on, Chukwueze scored the vital goal for last season’s UEFA Europa League winners.
Daniel Parejo picked out Gerard Moreno who then found Chukwueze wide on the right, but he connected well enough to beat Manuel Neuer in Bayern’s goal and send Villarreal into the semi-finals.
Though Bayern were hard pressed to avoid Champions League elimination at the quarter-finals stage in successive seasons, it was Villarreal who had the first chance to score as early as the sixth minute.
Gerard Moreno’s shot from the edge of the box flew past the goal, following which Bayern had two clear cut chances to go ahead while another Moreno effort for Villarreal could only hit the side netting just before half time.
Lewandowski got the Bavarians’ goal in the 52nd minute with a fantastic finish at the far post after he combined beautifully with Thomas Muller.
Danjuma had chances in both halves to put his team ahead but on both occasions wasted the opportunities, while Chukwueze was replaced by Alphonso Pedraga with five minutes left on the clock.
