England icon, Wayne Rooney has admitted he had earlier been looking forward to playing his latest match for The Three Lions against Nigeria’s Super Eagles, but will not settle for an upcoming battle with USA.
Rooney had been poised to star against Nigeria at Wembley last June, but the proposal was blacked by The FA, which reckoned that it would be a distraction to Gatreth Southgate’s World Cup build-up programme.
After missing the opportunity of starring against Nigeria,. who have several English Premier League players in their squad, Rooney will now tango the country where he plies his trade for his national team swansong.
Rooney has already put the idea of starring against Nigeria behind him, and looking eagerly towards the battle with Team USA, as the Everton and Manchester United legend says Rooney says he even looking forward to scoring in his final national team appearance.
Rooney added that he will finish his playing career in the United States, as the 33-year-old DC United striker is set to come off the bench in Thursday’s friendly.
When reminded that it was the FA’s decision to honour his record-breaking career with the match, Rooney said: “It’s not important.
“The main thing is to run out at Wembley one last time and have the opportunity to thank the fans for the years they’ve supported me.”
