Former Super Eagles’ midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju (aka Headmaster) has urged officials of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to quickly resolve the contract extension stalemate with the team’s current coach, Gernot Rohr, in order for the issue not to affect the country’s qualification campaign to next year’s Africa Cup of Nations and Qatar 2022 World Cup, megasportsarena.com reports.
With the qualifiers for Cameroon 2021 set to resume after the World Cup qualifiers commence in March, Adepoju is of a view that the Eagles need total concentration on the challenges ahead of them, which he fears could be derailed with controversies over the coach’s new contract.
Already speculation is lingering over Rohr’s future, with views divided over whether the will accept stringent terms forwarded to him by the NFF over conditions for a new contract, while offers are also rolling his way from other countries across Africa.
Among the biggest deals said to be starring Rohr in the eyes is one from DR Congo, but Adepoju reckons that the Franco-German gaffer deserves a quick resolution of the matter with the NFF, in order for him to continue the process of taking the Eagles through the next decade and get a possible shot at winning AFCON 2021 in Cameroon.
Adepoju, who made 48 appearances for the Eagles, with two World Cup outings and six goals to his name, told Soccernet.ng: “I am not really in support of the ongoing contract row between the Nigeria Football Federation and Gernot Rohr.
“Issue like this will create some level of distraction amongst some players as their mind may be diverted from the main agenda of the day, which is the qualification for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. We should be careful about how we handle this issue so that it won’t boomerang.”
