Bournemouth of England forward, Philip Chinedu Billing has admitted that the possibility of playing at next year’s World Cup with the Super Eagles is one of the factors motivating him towards a likely switch of nationality, megasportsarena.com reports.
While also confessing that being left out of Denmark’s squad for the upcoming European Championship is another factor tilting his thoughts towards Nigeria, the in-form attacker chipped in how much interest he always had in his father’s country.
He went on to reveal that he has been in regular contact with Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr, thereby keeping the gaffer on red alert about the possibility of a switch coming up officially any time.
Now the stage appears set for that to happen, as Billing openly admitted that he is considering switching his international allegiance to Nigeria after he was omitted from Denmark’s roster for the upcoming Euro Championship.
Before getting the snub, Billing has played only one match for Denmark’s senior team, which was a friendly against Faroe Islands in October 2020, when he was in action for 72 minutes and, the 24-year-old lad conceded that he is not in high reckoning with the Scandinavians.
Consequently, despite having earlier made 13 appearances combined for the country’s under-19 and under-21 teams, at which point he reasoned that it would be strange to represent Nigeria as he feels one hundred percent Danish, he is now thinking about making the switch.
Billing, who impressed this season in the English Championship for Bournemouth, with eight goals and four assists in 34 appearances, told BT Sports: “My father is from Nigeria, so I have thought about it, and I know that Nigeria would very much like me.
“I have talked to the coach several times, so it is something I have thought about more after I have not been selected for the European Championships. There will also soon be a World Cup that I will have to think about.
“I am almost 25 years old and I have only played one international match. I also have something I would like to achieve in my career.”
