Racing Genk of Belgium’s in-form top striker, Paul Ebere Onuachu is singing loads of praises to his teammates for supporting his burst of goals so far this season, megasportsarena.com reports.
After shooting top of the Jupiler League’s top scorers’ chart with his 14th goal of the campaign last weekend, Onuachu is looking back on his strides and admitted he owes lots of gratitude to his colleagues.
The former FC Midtjylland of Denmark towering attacker posited that he would not be able to score all those goals alone, and chipped in delight with how some of his co-strikers in the club have also been able to score their own fair share of goals as well.
Genk are the new leaders in the Jupiler Pro League thanks to the haul of goals from Onuachu, who has flourished in a 3-4-3 formation, with his impact in front of goal leaving a leading analyst, Gert Verheyen admitting he has been impressed with his many qualities
With 31 goals scored in 14 matches, Genk have the second best attack in Belgium so far this season, only Beerschot has scored more; but Onuachu’s side also have two players in the top three of the top scorer list.
Theo Bongonda has also scored nine goals this season in the shadow of Onuachu, who scored a brace at the weekend to now take his tally for the season to 14 goals, which former Club Bruge star, Verheyen says is a very impressive showing coming from the giant centre-forward.
Verheyen told Het Nieuwsblad: “Just look at how many of our bigger clubs, whose number nine is not firing. Genk are an exception. Paul Onuachu is, together with Dieumerci Mbokani, the only real deep striker at a top club who scores goals.
“What he does very well is always aim, as it should be with a real deep striker. His positional play is excellent. His decisions to come in front of his man or in his back are often the right ones.
“It’s hard to learn that it is a matter of feeling. It seems that Onuachu gets a lot of good crosses. While it is Onuachu who makes the crosses look good.”
“Onuachu has shone again in the system as he did at Midtjylland under Jess Thorup: as centre forward in a 3-4-3, flanked by two wingers, Ito and Bongonda. These three players have helped Genk achieve results.”
On his part, while admitting he is elated with his scoring form so early in his second season with Genk, who also have fellow-Nigerian attacker, Cyriel Dessers on their cards, Onuachu did not forget to give credit to his teammates for helping him go clear at the top of the chart with 12 league goals.
Onuachu, who scored twice on Saturday away to Cercle Bruge to go clear of his closest rivals in the top scorers’ chase, told Het Laatste Nieuws: “I am really satisfied with those twelve goals, I get an average of almost one goal per game.
“But of course you don’t make all those goals alone. My goals were just as much the credit of Junya Ito and Théo Bongonda, I am glad that they each poked one in the net.”
