New arrival at RKC Genk of Belgium, Stephen Odey has been described as young player with rare talent, as widely respected soccer tactician, Rene Weiler says the 21-year-old striker will do wonders at his latest base in Europe, megasportsarena.com reports.
Weiler was reeling lyrical, after Odey completed a five-year deal with Genk from FC Zurich of Switzerland, where he spent two years, following his departure from Mountain of Fire ^n Miracles Ministry (MFM) FC of Lagos in 2017.
Odey will now feature in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League with Genk and Weiler, who is renowned for his efforts in charge of TOP Belgian club, RSC Anderlecht, said he expects the youngster to shine in Belgium.
Weiler, though, added that Genk fans must also be patient with Odey, as he knows the club that once paid the wages of Leicester City of England midfielder, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi, will be expecting much from their latest protégé.
The gaffer, who is now in charge of Switzerland, also warned that Odey should not be seen as a direct replacement of Tanzania captain, Mbwana Samatta, who was top scorer for the Belgian champions last season.
Weiler told Het Nieuwsblad: “He still needs to improve on the technical aspects of his game and also his killer instincts. But already he is fast, powerful and has talent.”
On their part, Genk disclosed in a media statement that said they are happy to seal a deal with Odey, who on Friday penned a five-year contract 3.5 million euros and is expected to run until June 30, 2024.
Genk stated: ”Stephen is a fast and explosive attacker. He stands firmly on his legs, is efficient and plays with a lot of energy.
”At FC Zürich he played 45 games last season in which he scored 15 times and gave 3 assists. Stephen is also a Nigerian International with 3 caps.”
