Nigeria ex-international striker, Monday Odiaka on Thursday finally saw his long-standing record as scorer of the fastest goal at the World Youth Championship broken by Amadou Sagna of Senegal, megasportsarena.com reports
It happened on the opening day of this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, as Sagna struck after just nine seconds to send into history Odiaka’s mark of 14 seconds, which stood since 1985.
Sagna set the new mark of the competition’s fastest goal in Senegal’s first game against Tahiti, during a match in which he then went on to notch a hat-trick, as his side won 3-0 at Lublin Stadium.
The Cayor Foot Club player needed only 9.6 seconds to open the scoring and break the record that Odiaka had held for 34 years, when the African Continental Bank (ACB) FC all-action attacker helped Nigeria begin their campaign at Moscow ’85 with a 2-0 win against Canada in Minsk.
Back then, the Flying Eagles went on to finish third in the tournament, which held in the former Soviet Union, with Odiaka emerging joint-top scorer, after finding the net on three occasions.
Sagna has already also equaled that marked, having bagged the first hat-trick of Poland 2019, after scoring again in the 29th and 50th minutes to give Senegal victory, thereby setting them unto a possible glorious run.
