Lone Star of Liberia coach, Peter Butler has come out with a daring declaration that he and his players are in Lagos to pull off a historic upset against the Super Eagls in Friday’s opening game of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although he admitted that the three-time African champions will be favourites to win the game at Teslim Balogun Stadium, especially as his side have not beaten the Eagles in recent time, the English football tactician insists his team should not be written off.
Two of his reliable foreign-based stars, Sam Johnson and Seth Herberg, are out of the game due to injury, but Butler believes the other 15 he invited from overseas clubs and seven from Liberia’s domestic league will make him proud.
He further affirmed that The Lone Star are determined to ruffles some feathers, even as he conceded that the qualifying group that also has Cape Verde and Central African Republic will be tough, with Nigeria favourites to advance into the play-offs.
Butler submitted: “They have Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, I could name more, but we’re going to be competitive.
“It’s going to be a tough group and favourites Nigeria have got qualities and are heavily funded compared to us.
“But, I am going to back myself against any coach in this group and I believe we’re going to upset a few teams on the road.”
