Former Super Eagles’ captain, Nwankwo Kanu has stated delight with the team’s surge to the semi-finals at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, and declared that the feat makes him proud to be a Nigerian, megasportsarena.com reports.
Kanu, who is serving as an ambassador of Confederation of African Football (CAF) at the continental soccer showpiece, reckoned that the Eagles have been able to go this far due to good team work among the players and their ability to push against all odds.
He noted that not many people gave the team any chance of going beyond the round of 16, especially after their 2-0 loss to Madagascar in their last group match, but Kanu admitted he is pleasantly surprised to see Gernot Rohr’s squad trudging on.
The ex-Iwuayanwu Nationale of Owerri, Ajax Amsterdam of Holland, Inter Milan of Italy as well as Arsenal, Portsmouth and West Bromwich Albion of England star took to social media to reveal his respect for the Eagles, and thanked God for making the players’ efforts fruitful
He also heaped plaudits on the players for getting to the last-four and hinted that they have worked hard enough already to deserve a place in the final next Friday, July 19, and aim for Nigeria’s fourth AFCON title.
‘Papilo’ stated: “Incredible support from @ng_supereagles fans. Another fantastic win well done boys.
“The boys gave it a great teamwork effort and push. We are all proud. Nigeria officially through to the #caf2019 semifinals. We thank God.”
