Everton of England star, Alex Iwobi will not have the opportunity to continue his rich vein of revitalized form this week, as his club’s English Premier League clash with Manchester City has been called off due to a n outbreak of coronavirus in The Citizens’ camp.
Megasportsarena.com reports that Iwobi was again in top for m for The Toffees last weekend, as he continues excelling in his new position as right-wing-back under Carlo Ancelotti, but he will now have to wait much longer before getting another chance to showcase himself.
The delay for Iwobi et al comes after reports emerged early Monday that The Toffees’ clash with City had become the second Premier League match to be postponed due to coronavirus, after Aston Villa versus Newcastle United earlier this month.
Victory for Iwobi’s side at Goodison Park would have taken them level on points at the top of the Premier League table with city rivals Liverpool, while City could also have moved into the top four with a win, though they are next due in action away at Chelsea on Sunday, but all that has been put on hold, following confirmation of the postponement of Monday’s match.
It comes after City announced that Gabriel Jesus and Kyle Walker had tested positive for coronavirus, along with two members of club staff, following which the Etihad Stadium outfit quickly closed their first-team training ground.
A statement by the Manchester-based side read: “After the latest round of Covid-19 testing, the club returned a number of positive cases, in addition to the four already reported on Christmas Day.
“With the security of the bubble compromised, there posed a risk that the virus could spread further amongst the squad, the staff and potentially beyond. Based on strong medical advice the Premier League, in consultation with both clubs, have decided to postpone the fixture.
“All positive cases involving players and staff will observe a period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine. The first team training ground at City Football Academy will close for an indeterminate period.
“With the squad and associated bubble undergoing testing before any decision is made for training to resume. Everyone at the club wishes all of our colleagues a speedy recovery ahead of their return to work, training and competition.”
