Manchester United of England striker, Odion Jude Ighalo has been absolved of any blame for failing to score a gilt edged chance in Sunday’s English Premier League clash with Everton, as his team’s captain, Harry Maguire says it was only due to a great reaction save by the opposing goalkeeper, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although many critics slammed Ighalo for failing to put away two chances that came his way during Sunday’s game at Goodison Park, Maguire insists his team’s January deadline day arrival on loan from Shanghai Shenhua of China did the best he could, but The Toffees’ keeper, Jordan Pickford was at his best.
Incidentally, Ighalo also had chances to score in his two previous EPL games against Chelsea and Watford but the 30-year-old had also been denied by both keepers, such that Maguire is holding out in defence of the former Super Eagles’ striker that he has now played five official matches for United, and scored just once in a Europa League match against Club Brugge of Belgium.
He, however, failed to replicate that feat of last Thursday this past weekend, as he fired banks after getting off the bench for United and his side played out a 1-1 draw against Alex Iwobi’s team at Goodison Park, following two goalkeeping blunders at both ends of the pitch.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring in the third minute when an attempted clearance by United goalkeeper, David De Gea rebounded off the striker and into the net, while the visitors equalized through Bruno Fernandes, whose lame shot from distance somehow beat Pickford.
Ighalo then went on in place of Mason Greenwood in the 72nd minute and he got very close to grabbing a winner, only for Pickford to pull off a magnificent save to deny the striker from close range in the 90th minute, much to amazement of Maguire, who hailed his England teammate.
Maguire told BBC: “It was a great reaction save. It was an unbelievable chance to win the game – and David pulled off a world class save for us too.”
