Chelsea of England defender, Fikayo Tomori is still relishing the euphoria of his new five-year contract with the London club, and went on to disclose that he felt honoured to sign the dotted lines because the team has been very good to him, megasportsarena.com reports.
In spite of some reports indicating that the contract extension went through several stages of talks between the club and his management team, the 21-year-old central defender said he had no hesitation about putting pen to paper on the new contract.
The new deal comes in recognition of Tomori’s tremendous form in only his first full season with Chelsea, after emerging as a regular in Frank Lampard’s starting line-up this season, beginning 11 of 16 English Premier League games heading into this weekend.
The Nigerian-born youngster, who also holds Canadian citizenship, returned to Chelsea in the summer, after loan spells at Hull City and Derby County, but he has been able to stamp his spot in the squad, mostly due to an injury for Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz’s departure to Arsenal.
He has taken his chance under Lampard, who he previously worked with at Derby last season, and all pundits are unanimous that Tomori’s form has been top-notched so far this season, with an additional fillip coming through first England cap as a substitute against Kosovo in November.
However, Tomori is staying humble and modest, as he will not allow his giant strides within such a short while get to his head, but says he remains grateful to everyone who has made his iconic breakthrough at Stamford Bridge possible, and promise to keep putting in his very best always.
Tomori said: “The club has been so good to me, looking after and developing me during that time into the player and the person I am today. It’s a dream come true to sign a new five-year contract. I’m really happy the club have shown this faith in me and I’m just excited to carry on.”
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: “We are very happy to see another fantastic young player come through from our Academy into the senior team. Fikayo has been with us since he was seven years old and has contributed to many Chelsea successes at youth level.
“Having enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Derby last season, Fikayo had a strong start to this campaign and we are enjoying seeing him grow into a key player for us. We are delighted he has committed to the club for the coming years.”
