Nigeria’s female basketball national team, D’Tigress’ point-guard, Ezinne Kalu is talking tough ahead of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, as she believes the side is strong enough to ruffle some feathers and declared that they will go all the way to win a medal.
Although she did not name the shade of medal D’Tigress can win in Tokyo, the France-based player stressed that their build-up programme has put them in good stead to make history, but acknowledged that getting a medal amongst the top 12 teams of the world will not come easy.
Megasportsarena.com reports that the 2019 FIBA AfroBasket most valuable player went on to reason further that, with the right personnel and positive attitude from D’Tigress, plus all round hard work from everyone in the team, a podium finish in Tokyo is possible.
The amiable ace, who was in 2020 voted Guard of the Year in the top basketball division in France, first Team All-Imports France League and first Team All-French Player as well as All-Star starting 5 member of the qualifiers in Serbia, reasoned that D’Tigress just have to stay fully focused in order to excel.
While reflecting on what D’Tigress must have gained during 10 days at their recent intensive training camp in Atlanta, USA, Kalu added that the number one team in Africa just have to live up to expectation from everyone in Nigeria and across the continent.
Kalu posited: “They need to show up, be focused, give 100 percent and really buy in because the Olympics is a huge platform and I feel like we can really do something special.
“For us to do something special, we have to do the work. We have to do the necessary things to really succeed just like how we do for the world cup and AfroBasket.
“Every camp that we have, we know that this is the time for us to get serious, this is time for us to really put the work in. I don’t expect anything less from my girls.”
