Former Barcelona of Spain and Sporting Lisbon of Portugal winger, Emmanuel Amuneke is reportedly in line for a new role as an assistant coach in the Nigerian national team, Super Eagles, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although Amuneke currently has a job as technical director at a club in Egypt, where he was initially signed on s the head coach, the 1994 African Footballer of The Year appears ready to dump that duty post in order to join the Eagles’ crew.
It would be a return to Nigerian national team duty, as he once served as an assistant to Samson Siasia during the ill-fated qualifiers for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, only for him to bounce back in winning the FIFA U-17 World Cup win the Golden Eaglets then led Tanzania to last year’s AFCON in Egypt, where he once played for top Cairo-based side, Zamalek.
The onus is now on him to accept an offer of joining the Eagles’ crew, as a report by SCORENigeria revealed that Amuneke is one of the indigenous Nigerian coaches being tipped to step in and assist Eagles’ head coach, Gernot Rohr.
This is sequel to feelers from Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that the country’s soccer lords plan to appoint another aide that is more experienced than recently appointed assistant, Joseph Ikpo Yobo, who began to assist Rohr during last month’s international friendlies against Algeria and Tunisia, but the crew fumbled in his first two competitive games against Sierra Leone.
A top source informed SCORENigeria: “It’s now left for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to open talks with both Amuneke and Salisu because Rohr clearly needs a capable deputy.”
