Racing Genk of Belgium attacker, Cyriel Dessers has admitted he will have to put in more effort with his club in order to get a regular spot in the Super Eagles, megasportsarena.com reports.
After being left out of the Eagles’ list of invitees for this month’s Africa Cup[ of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone, the former Heracles Almelo of Holland star admitted he was sad not to be included in the roster, but acknowledged that it simply means he has to work harder.
Having scored for his club last weekend, Dessers is now looking forward to better days ahead of him with the Belgian outfit, even as he noted that Nigeria’s array of stars makes it tough for any player to get a call up.
The 25-year-old lad with a Nigerian mother and Belgian father got his Eagles’ debut during last month’s international friendly 1-1 draw against Tunisia in Austria, but he has been overlooked for this month’s AFCON qualifiers, and he admitted he is disappointed that he will now have to wait till 2021 to get his first competitive game in green-and-white.
However, after scoring his third league goal of the campaign last weekend, with an assist from fellow-Eagles’ attacker, Paul Ebere Onuachu to help their team defeat KAS Eupen, Dessers stressed that he wants to build on it and get more regular playing time with Genk, knowing that he must be at his best to always get another call to the Nigerian team.
Dessers told AOIFootball.com: “It was nice to be on the score sheet again. I felt it’s been a long time coming for me and I hope to build on this goal in my subsequent matches.
“On not getting a call up for the national team for games against Sierra Leone, personally I was not happy after knowing I did not make the cut. But then again, it shows I have to play more at club level and hopefully tries to always be at my best week in week out.”
