Qatar SC of Qatar striker, Anthony Okpotu continues making waves in the oil rich Middle East nation, as he was again song with a goal that capped a pleasant 2020 for him, but it was a disappointing end to the year for Jerome Akor, despite netting a goal in Norway.
Megasportsarena.com reports that, in what becomes a thrilling climax for Okpotu in the outgoing year, the former Lobi Stars of Makurdi attacker and one-time top scorer in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) was again on target for his team in the Doha Derby.
‘The Black Panther’ was the nickname on all lips, as Okpotu fired home his fourth goal for Qatar SC and, though it was only good enough for a draw with table-topping Al Saad, commentators reeled out superlatives for him over the manner in which he cashed in on a defensive slip inside the box to stab home for the opening goal.
Okpotu’s 31st minute goal was, however, cancelled out later on and the Week 11 game ended in a 1-1 draw, but his side stay fourth in the Qatar Stars League with 19 points from 11 matches, 10 points behind leaders Al Saad.
In Norway, Jerome Akor’s goal for Sogndal could not save his side from falling 3-2 to Mjondalen and they failed to gain promotion back to the Norwegian top-flight for the third straight year running, as his team struggled after going behind after just nine minutes.
Akor drew them level in the 79th minute from the penalty spot and Sogndal then took the lead for the first time on 80 minutes, but Mjondalen scored two late goals and kept their place in the Norwegian top-flight, while denying their opponents a long-awaited return to the top league.
It was a promotion play-off game with a huge Nigerian presence, as Mjondalen paraded Shuaibu Ibrahim in their victorious squad, while Sogndal had Akor alongside two of his compatriots, Igho Ogbu and Peter Michael.
