Super Eagles’ right full back, Tyrone Ebuehi is heading for the exit door at FC Twente Enschede of Netherlands, following the Dutch club’s verdict that they cannot afford to buy him from Benfica of Portugal.
Ebuehi excelled on loan from Benfica at Twente last season, thereby spurring talk about the possibility of the Eredivisie side turning the deal into a full contract, but that prospect may not come to fruition after all.
That is sequel to a declaration by the management of Twente that they will not be able to buy him this summer and the club’s technical director, Jan Streuer has pointedly ruled out the possibility of the lad staying put in their squad.
Megasportsarena.com reports that this is a fresh setback for the 25-year-old injury prone defender, who started all but one of the official matches contested by Twente last season, logging 2,931 minutes in total.
The Haarlem-born fullback started his senior career in Netherlands with ADO Den Haag, from where he moved to Benfica in 2018, but the Portuguese side now aim to sell him outright rather than send him out on loan for another season.
Ebuehi’s loan deal at Twente came with an option to buy set at two million euros, but Streuer stressed that the price tag is beyond what his Enschede-based side can afford.
Consequently, Streuer has already turned focus to other transfer targets and is looking at the possibility of signing FC Emmem’s Glenn Bijl or FC Utrecht’s Giovanni Troupé, who played on loan at Twente last season.
Ebuehi will now face a worrisome start to the summer transfer window, after Streuer affirmed during an interview with Dutch newspaper, De Twentsche Courant Tubantia: “We can’t buy him.”
