Udinese of Italy defender, William Troost-Ekong has emphatically disclosed that Heracles Almelo of Holland striker, Cyriel Dessers is very eager to don Nigeria’s green-and-white colours, as the lad with a Belgian father wants to star for the Super Eagles, megasportsarena.com reports.
In spite of Desser’s possible debut with the Eagles having been put on hold by the forced break to all football action by coronavirus, which caused a postponement of the double-fixture 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone for which the striker had been invited, Troost-Ekong disclosed that the Belgium-born lad is still keen on playing for Nigeria.
He went on to affirm that he can reveal the 25-year-old Dessers’ mind on the matter at hand, since they both speak Dutch, and he had a conversation with Heracles star before the striker received his first call-up for the games against Sierra Leone.
Back then, Troost-Ekong, who was born in Holland and previously played for the youth team of Tottenham Hotspur in England, recalled how Dessers reached out to him, in order to find out if he was making the right choice by pledging his international future to Nigeria, and he was happy to advice the new invitee to put his trust in a rosy future ahead of him with the Eagles.
Ekong told the Super Eagles Media: “I spoke with Cyriel Dessers before his call up. He asked me questions about being part of the team. We both speak Dutch. It was normal for us to talk; I said he should take the opportunity with both hands.
“I told him there is a tough competition in the striker role and that playing for the Super Eagles is the best decision I have ever made myself playing football. I’m really happy he decided to play for Nigeria. He is really looking forward to it. It is great now that more and more young and talented players want to play for the Super Eagles as we are one of the biggest teams in Africa.”
