Team Nigeria’s chef de mission at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, Peter Nelson has stated delight with the contingent’s 33rd position finish on the final medals’ table and praised the athletes for making it possible, megasportsarena.com reports.
While also thanking all sports stakeholders and officials for contributing to the country’s success in Tokyo, Nelson added that it is also noteworthy that the contingent placed fourth in Africa, with a total of 10 medals on the podium.
Nigeria’s haul of four gold, one silver and five bronze medals placed the country fourth from the continent behind Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, leaving Nelson appreciative of all 22 athletes that helped the nation win its second highest number of gongs in any edition of the Paralympics.
The top shot, who is also director of planning, monitoring and information in the ministry of youth and sports development, stressed that is commendable seeing the current contingent get close to the nation’s best ever haul of 12 medals at the Games for special sports athletes.
Nelson posited that Tokyo 2020 was hugely successful for Nigeria and concluded: “It is awesome and quite remarkable what we have achieved at this Paralympic Games.
“I give glory to God and specially appreciate the athletes, who are the gladiators, not forgetting their coaches and support staff.
“They all made it possible for the Nigerian anthem to be heard ten good times at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.”
