Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons will turn their focus on Sunday’s battle with Portugal, after facing Jamaica on Thursday at the invitational competition in United States of America.
Megasportsaena.com gathered that the Falcons’ first game was scheduled to hold barely 48 hours after the team landed Tuesday morning in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, where the 2021 WNT Summer Series is taking place.
The Nigerian contingent departed Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos at about 10:45 on Monday night aboard Delta Airlines and, after about 12 hours airborne, the delegation of ten home-based players and officials landed at about 10:25am.
They were subsequently airlifted to Houston, Texas where the team will be based during the tournament, whose matches will be played at BBVA Stadium and the brand new Q2 Stadium in Austin.
The final match of the series, which will be between the Falcons and USA’s women team-A will be the first-ever football match at the state-of-the-art $240m Q2 Arena, which was built by Austin FC, the newest club in USA’s Major League Soccer (MLS).
A report by aclsports.com added: “Rivers Angels forward Vivian Ikechukwu and Bayelsa United midfielder Joy Bokiri are among the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership stars on board with the team to the Summer Series. Invited foreign based players, including team captain Asisat Oshoala will join the team in Houston.
“The WNT Summer Series tournament will run between June 10 and June 16, 2021 and will see the Super Falcons clashing with their Jamaica in Houston on Thursday, 10th before taking on Portugal three days later at the BBVA Stadium.
“Their last match will be against hosts USA, four-time winners of the FIFA World Cup and four-time winners of the Olympic football gold, at the Q2 Stadium on 16th June. Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum will use the tournament to prepare his squad for the forthcoming Women’s World Cup qualifiers against the Black Queens of Ghana.”
