The much-anticipated 2022 African Women’s Nations Cup eliminator between the Super Falcons of Nigeria and their perennial rivals, Black Queens of Ghana has been moved from June to October, megasportsarena.com reports.
Confederation of African Football (CAF) had originally fixed the game to hold between June 7 to 15, but the match will now be played between October 18 and 26, with the continent’s soccer governing body citing Coronavirus travel restrictions for the decision.
The change in dates means the Falcons will now feature in invitational tournaments before this crucial qualifier, with the biggest of their build-up contest set to be hosted by current FIFA Women’s World Cup champions, USA.
This development comes few hours after lovers of female soccer and some sports journalist witnessed Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) ‘Show Your Other Side Challenge’ event that was organised in conjunction with the Spanish LaLiga.
The event, which held at Elegbata Sports Complex, Lagos, had in attendance Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Amaju Pinnick, General Consul Spanish Consulate, Juan Antonio Moreda Otero, ex-international midfielder and LaLiga Ambassador, Mutiu Adepoju.
While welcoming guests, the media and fans to the event, NWFL chairperson, Aisha Falode emphasized that the event represents how the League is trying to engage with lovers of the game.
Falode declared: “Football belongs to the fans and it’s important to create opportunities and platforms to engage and interact with them beyond match days.
“This here is the NWFL working at building the blocks of confidence of the Nigeria football lovers to buy into our vision evolving into a global league brand eventually. We will not get there at once.
“It has taken so much to get to where we are today, and it will take so much more to arrive at destination hence why it’s important to get the corporation and collaboration of stakeholders, which the fans are major.
“One of such collaborations is responsible for this event and with many more purposeful relationships like we have with LaLiga, we’ll go further towards our goal.”
