The ministry of sports has confirmed the dissolution of the board of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN), ahead of the track and field body’s election at the start of this week, megasportsarena.com reports.
A statement from the AFN’s media unit disclosed that the board has been dissolved upon the expiration of its term and affirmed that a new leadership will emerge at the elective congress on Monday, June 14.
While announcing the dissolution in an official statement, a press release from the ministry noted the election scheduled for the start of this week and enjoined all delegates to eschew bitterness but vote for candidates that can unite the federation.
This comes after an earlier move by the AFN at its extraordinary congress on Sunday in Abuja, urging the sports ministry to invoke article 10.4 of its constitution and dissolve the outgoing board
The reaction to that request added: “Pursuant to article 10.4 of the 2017 constitution of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, the Ministry hereby dissolve the board of the AFN.
“We have advised that the elections should be organised in accordance with the 2017 constitution of the AFN as contained in the agreement reached at the reconciliation meeting held in Abuja last April and brokered by the Confederation of African Athletics and World Athletics.”
