Racing Genk of Belgium attacker, Paul Ebere Onuachu has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the Belgian Jupiler League side for at least another three years, megasportsarena.com reports.
In the wake of his failure to get a summer transfer deal that would see him leave Belgium, after only two years since his arrival from FC Midtjylland of Denmark, Onuachu is now happy to stay put.
That has now become possible, after he agreed a one-year contract extension and he’s now tied to the Limburg club until the summer of 2024.
Onuachu has been rewarded with a new lucrative deal less than a week after scoring his 50th goal for Racing Genk, against Rapid Vienna in the opening round of matches in the UEFA Europa League.
The 27-year-old product of Young Stars of Lagos and FC Ebedei of Shagamu made it 51 goals in 79 appearances after coming off the bench to net another winner in a league match against Sint-Truidense VV at the weekend.
He has been a success since joining Racing Genk from FC Midtjylland in August 2019 for a fee of six million euro.
Last season, Onuachu mustered 33 goals in the Belgian First Division A, a feat that earned him the Golden Boot and the Professional Footballer of the Year awards.
The new agreement also comes few hours after Genk’s coach, John van den Brom disclosed that he informed the tall hitman that he would not start Sunday’s clash with Sint-Truidense VV.
Fans were shocked to see the bench role for Onuachu, who has had a brilliant start to the season, scoring six goals in ten matches across all competitions.
Prior to the trip to STVV, Onuachu had started all the eight matches played by Genk since the beginning of August.
However, with games coming thick and fast, Van den Brom decided to rotate his squad or put them at risk of picking up injuries.
The decision saw Onuachu start on the bench and ex-Chelsea of England striker, Ike Ugbo handed his starting debut for the Limburg-based club.
Van den Brom has now admitted that Onuachu was eager to start and the gaffer was delighted seeing the Super Eagles’ star net the winning goal after getting off the bench.
The tactician told voetbalbelgie.be: “Paul is Paul, a phenomenon. He always wants to play. That’s why I spoke to him separately. After the match he said ‘thank you coach.’ He went in so strong.”
