SSC Napoli of Italy striker, Victor Osimhen’s replacement at Lille Metropole of France, Jonathan David has admitted that he is very much eager to replicate the top scoring form enacted by the Super Eagles’ youngster during the single season he spent with the French Ligue 1 club.
Megasportsarena.com gathered that, although David interjected that he has to be his own man and play mostly to his own abilities, he acknowledged that the high marks Osimhen pulled off in a single season with Lille means the player stepping into his shoes will be expected to do almost as much as the Nigerian lad did.
While also describing Osimhen as an exceptional striker, David added that he will have to really work pretty hard in order to meet the high standards set by the youngster last season, but still maintained that they both have different attributes and reckoned that he will not be under any form of pressure to impress.
Dramatically, while Osimhen moved to Napoli in a record-breaking transfer for the Italian Serie A club as well as for Nigeria and Africa, Lille also broke their previous highest purchasing fee when they paid more than 27 million Euro to lure David from KAA Gent of Belgium.
The 20-year-old Canada international noted the similarities between their deals, the fact that they moved to Lille from Belgium and similar technical styles, which could make all expectations on him stiffer than ever, but he insisted he is not bothered by task ahead of him.
David told L’Equipe: “Osimhen is an exceptional player who has had a great season here, but we are different players and each has their own background.
“I may have been influenced to opt for Lille because Osimhen also came out of Belgium and we could say that we have a similar background. It played a bit. Maybe it will go very well for me, as it did for him. It doesn’t bother me at all.”
