The first vice-president of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Barrister Seyi Akinwumi has come out with a declaration that they are still interested in having Franco-German tactician, Gernot Rohr as head coach of the Super Eagles, hence their decision to forward terms of a new contract to him, and they are now awaiting his response to the offer, megasportsarena.com reports.
In contrast with critical comments in certain circles of the round leather game in the country, Akinwunmi parried insinuation s that top shots at The Glasshouse are trying to force the gaffer out by offering him what many people consider to be ‘impossible conditions,’ as he disclosed that they are eagerly awaiting Rohr’s response to the contract extension details sent to him.
He declared that he is personally hopeful that Rohr will sign the new contract in order to keep the job and continue in charge of the Eagles, but stressed that the NFF should not be called to blame or castigated should the former Niger Republic, Gabon and Burkina Faso handler decide not to sign the dotted lines on what is expected to be his third contract with the soccer body.
He emphasized that the ball is now in Rohr’s court, as the NFF have demonstrated their candid intention to continue with him in charge of the Eagles and, for having sent him a new contract proposal, proved their unbiased intentions.
Even as Akinwunmi, who is also chairman of Lagos State Football Association, enthused that Rohr has not shown any reservations about continuing on the job during his discussion with him, he believes the gaffer’s third lap with the Eagles will be better than the first two.
Akinwunmi submitted: “We’re still interested that’s why we’ve sent a contract and I’m sure it’s gotten to him by now. I’ve spoken to him a few times and he has told me that he’s had a good discussion with the President so I don’t see that there will be a problem in that regard beyond crossing the T’s and dotting I’s but if there is, let’s move on.
“People make decisions that affect others. So, we won’t be in a tight corner if he was not to be employed today we will get somebody else for sure. There is nobody that is indispensable but I like to be positive and just hope that he will get the new agreement signed and that his second half will be more successful than the first half.”
