The Super Eagles are bound to hit the ground running from the word go in the qualifiers to next year’s World Cup, as Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have declared the route towards getting a ticket to Qatar 2022 as one of ‘high importance.’
This follows a declaration issued on Sunday by the NFF’s executive committee during their meeting at Edo Heritage Hotel in Benin City, where the members rose with a unanimous verdict that no stone must be left unturned in ensuring the Eagles’ qualification is sealed.
Megasportsarena.com reports that the verdict comes just over a month before the Eagles step out for their first match in the qualifiers for Qatar 2022, as they will host Liberia at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos on September 3 and then play away to Cape Verde on September 7.
The Eagles’ next hurdle will be a double-header against Central African Republic (CAR) between October 6 and 12, with the first leg in Nigeria and reverse fixture away, following which they will face Liberia and Cape Verde again the following month.
The last two matches will be played between November 11 and 16, first in Monrovia and then in Cape Verde, following which the group winner will in March 2022 go for a final play-off against the top team from one of the other nine groups for a place at the 2022 World Cup.
Heading into the fixtures next month, the NFF’s executive committee has now moved fast to put all signals on red alert, with a number of far-reaching pronouncements at the meeting in Benin City, which included commendations for the soccer body’s sponsors and partners.
A communiqué issued after the meeting submitted in part: “For their unwavering devotion and unflinching support to the cause of Nigeria Football in these trying times, the Executive Committee praised the Federation’s Sponsors, Partners and Supporters and assured that the National Teams will continue to challenge for honours to give them the necessary good mileage for their commitment.
“In view of the significant changes and disruptions to the way football (as well as other areas of life) is administered and organized globally in the past few years, made more poignant by the global coronavirus pandemic that threw the world into jeopardy at the beginning of year 2020 and still wreaking havoc.
“And the glaring obsoleteness of the current NFF Statutes, the Executive Committee resolved to forward a proposal to the Congress for approval of the commencement of the process for amendment of the NFF Statutes.
“The Executive Committee resolved, in view of the high importance of Nigeria’s qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar, that all strands, threads and patterns must be put in their right places and complemented with hard work to ensure the Super Eagles have a successful qualifying campaign even before the race starts next month.
“Committee enjoined the Secretariat to be at the top of its game and leave no stone unturned to see that the Eagles emerge winner of their Group C pool and go ahead to win the home-and-away knockout round to ensure a seventh FIFA World Cup appearance for Nigeria.”
