Joe Aribo has subtly backtracked on his previous commitment to Glasgow Rangers by evading talk on his future after being quizzed on Steven Gerrard, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.
The Nigerian midfielder, who is currently with the Super Eagles as they prepare for Thursday’s Afcon qualifying match against Sierra Leone in Abuja, previously revealed he was happy with life at Rangers and wasn’t thinking of leaving, but when asked specifically about Gerrard and Villa as well as Vieira and Palace evaded the subject by only saying he wasn’t think about that stuff ‘right now’.
It marks a subtle change in wording from the creative playmaker where rather than equivocally rejecting interest from other parties, he could only say he was focused on Nigeria.
He said: I’m not focused on that. Right now I’m with Nigeria so I’m just focusing on playing with my country and representing my country. Like I said I’m not focused on all of that stuff, I’m just focusing on Nigeria right now.”
On Gerrard, however, he opened up:
“He’s a good coach on and off the pitch. He really helped me settle my first time away from home so I’ve got no bad word to say about him.”
Consider the previous quotes which were clear as indicating he wasn’t thinking about leaving, is this a softening of stance somewhat?
Rangers fans are surely waiting.
