Arsenal of England midfielder, Alex Iwobi is still sparring thoughts for his club, even while on national team assignment with Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations, as he says his club’s target will be to gain massive improvements in the coming season.
Megasportsarena.com reports that, after failing to make the English Premier League top-four for the third season running and finishing second to London rivals, Chelsea in the UEFA Europa League, Iwobi admits The Gunners need to step up in the coming campaign.
With that in view, Iwobi admitted that he and his colleagues at Emirates Stadium must put in extra effort, while acknowledging that they have to show better understanding of the tactics of their coach, Unai Emery.
Iwobi admitted that Emery will be expecting significant improvements from all his players, as Arsenal return to the Europa League next season, after settling for a fifth-place finish in the Spanish gaffer’s first season in charge at Emirates Stadium.
The often inconsistent playmaker acceded as well that Emery will not be pleased if The Gunners again fail to make the EPL top-four in the 2019/20, with an additional charge that they have to stop Manchester City from achieving a third successive Premier League title.
Iwobi said: “It’s hard to say right now whether Man City are going to dominate, but they could be favourites, considering they won it again.
“I’m sure every club’s going to invest and try and get their team right. Pre-season’s coming up really soon, so everyone’s trying to get ready for the season to start.
“We haven’t spoken about where our targets are for next season, but I’m sure he’d [Emery] want to improve.
“Obviously we want to get back into Champions League football and, if not, win as many competitions, including the Europa League as well.
“The whole team would want to improve on the previous season we had and try to get to that Champions League.”
