Former Super Eagles’ winger, Finidi George has refrained his declaration about interest in the Nigerian national team’s coaching job by declaring that he actually prefers starting with any of the youth cadre squads instead, megasportsarena.com reports.
In contrast with initial reports at the start of the week that the former Ajax Amsterdam of Holland, Real Betis of Spain and Ipswich Town of England ‘master crosser’ had thrown his hat into the ring for consideration in coaching the Eagles, ‘Finito’ said his plan is from a different angle.
He admitted he would love to handle the Eagles one day, but added during Mega Sports on Star 101.5 FM, Lafgos that his immediate target for now is either with the Golden Eaglets (U17), Flying Eagles (U20) or Olympic Eagles (U23), as he would love to impart his knowledge of the game on young players that are still coming through the ranks.
However, the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner and member of Nigeria’s maiden World Cup squad at USA ’94, who also won the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995, when they beat AC Milan of Italy in the final, with former Eagles’ captain, Nwankwo Kanu in his team, said he will not reject any offer to coach the Nigerian senior team if that opening comes first.
Finidi reiterated: “I love coaching young players, and I would love to start from that stage. I want to coach one of the youth teams, before I start talking about the Super Eagles. If the senior team job comes first, no problem, I will take it, because I want to help my country, but I would like to start at the youth level. That’s why I am already doing with Mallorca and in Turkey.”
