Team Nigeria clinched its fifth medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Tuesday as Liadi Taiwo won a silver medal in the women’s 76Kg, after a total lift of 120kg in snatch and clean & jerk category.
Megasportsarena.com reports that the 20 years old Taiwo lifted 96kg in the snatch event, following her record 120kg lift in the clean and jerk with a total of 216kg, setting two junior commonwealth records in the process.
Team Nigeria now have 2 Gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.
Meanwhile, the athletics events have started with Team Nigeria athletes showing glimpses of greatness.
The trio of Grace Nwokocha (10.99), Rosemary Chuwkuma (11.02) and Joy Udo-Gabriel (11.43) have advanced to the semi-final of the women’s 100m, while Favour Ashe (10.12), Raymond Ekevwo (10.14) and Godson Brume (10.36) also booked their place in the men’s 100m semi-final.
In Judo, Joy Asonye stands a chance of winning a bronze medal in the women’s 70kg category later this evening, after defeating Fiji’s Shanice Takayawa in the repachange bout.
She will face Kelly Pollard (England) at 5pm for a place on the podium.
Cecilia James also outlasted T. Soko of Zambia to qualify for the quarterfinals in the -63kg women’s category.
