Nigeria will have a formidable foe to contend with when they host Liberia his Friday in their first qualifier for the 2022 World Cup, as a member of The Lone Star’s squad that stole a shock 2-1 win over the Super Eagles’ 10 years ago, Christopher Wreh is in Lagos with the current team.
However, megasportsarena.com reports that Wreh, who played for Arsenal of England at the height of his career, is not in Lagos to play the mach on Friday at Teslim Balogun Stadium, but he will be calling shots from the dugout as a member of the coaching crew of the history chasing Liberian squad.
Sensationally, Wreh’s biggest moment while playing against a Nigerian squad came 20 years ago, when he scored twice in his team’s 2-1 win on home soil in Monrovia in July 2001, which is one of only three victories The Lone Star have recorded over the Super Eagles.
Wreh is now in the current squad as an assistant coach and he will try to orchestrate fond memories of his memorable milestone, as both countries renew their rivalry dates back to 1975, with Nigeria having won nine of 14 clashes, the last of which was a 6-1 drubbing of the Liberians in 2012.
Therefore, history and current form make the Eagles strong favorites to win Friday’s game and even go all the way to claim one of five qualifying slots to represent Africa at Qatar 2022, but the visitors’ English coach, Peter Butler insists his side are not in Lagos to count the skyscrapers.
Among the lads he will be counting on will new invitee, Peter Wilson, who was called up after doubts emerged over the availability of Kpah Sherman, who initially withdrew due to a busy scheduled with his club in domestic fixtures.
Other players the Eagles will have to watch out for include Mohammed Kamara, who scored for Hataspor last weekend, alongside dashing midfielder, Abu Kamara, as well as Marcus Macauley, Allen Njei, Oscar Dorley, Peter Wilson, Terrence Tisdell, Ashley Williams, Jeremy Singbeh, Prince Balde and David Tweh.
