Aston Villa target Calvin Bassey has spoken about the boost he received throughout the season for Rangers whilst also commenting on his preferred position.
Megasportsarena.com reports that Bassey, 22, has been heavily linked with a move to Villa Park to once again work with Steven Gerrard, who signed him at Rangers from Leicester City in 2020.
The Scottish club have reportedly slapped a £25million price-tag on the defender as they look to avoid losing one of the key players they built their run to the Europa League final on last season.
Bassey grabbed the attention of the footballing world with his performances in the previously mentioned run throughout Europe and the player has since put this down to the boost he received following a shock admission from his national team.
Bassey spoke about the disappointment of being left out the Nigeria squad for the AFCON and how it provided him with a necessary boost to kick on with Rangers.
He said: “Obviously it was very disappointing. I knew I just needed to work harder and just try out my game and hopefully I’m guessing that’s why I’m here. Hopefully I’ve done that and caught the coaches’ eyes.”
Bassey went on to talk about his preferred position within football, where he said: “I always get asked this but me, I just like to play football.
“So wherever the manager puts me, striker, I am going to go there and give everything I have got.”
The versatility he displays means he can operate at left-back or centre-back, which could explain Steven Gerrard’s interest in bringing him to Villa after he highlighted his desire for players who can take on “tactical information” after the signing of Boubacar Kamara on a free transfer.
