CAF Club Competitions: Nigerian Clubs Shine On The Continent

Rivers United defeated Liberian champions Watanga FC 3-0 on Sunday evening in the first leg of the CAF Champions League qualifying match in Port Harcourt.

All three goals came in the first half of the game.

The home side got their first goal in the eighth minute courtesy of Kenechukwu Agu.

Rivers scored the 2nd goal ten minutes later after a good exchange between Paul Acquah and Ebube Duru, who fired in a fierce drive from 20 yards out.

Acquah then turned from provider to goalscorer in first-half stoppage time to increase Rivers United’s lead.

The second leg is scheduled for next weekend (September 18) at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia.

Rivers United will advance to the next round of the competition if they avoid defeat or lose by not more than two goals.

Plateau United drew 2-2 away to Stade Mandji in Gabon in another CAF Champions League encounter. The return leg will be played in Abuja next week.

Kwara United hit AS Douanes of Niger 3-0 in the CAF Confederation Cup match in Lagos.

Paul Samson put the Afonja Warriors ahead against AS Douanes of Niger Republic in the fifth minute. Wasiu Jimoh scored Kwara United second goal from the penalty spot after 17 minutes, before he got his brace five minutes from the break.
