Barry Ferguson Urges Rangers To Chain Calvin Bassey & Joe Aribo

Barry Ferguson has urged Rangers to “chain up” Calvin Bassey to make sure he doesn’t leave this summer.

The former Ibrox captain is a huge fan of the Nigeria defender and insists he has everything you’d want in a defender these days. His versatility allied to his ability, physical attributes and potential for growth mean he is not someone he’d like to see his old side lose.

The 22-year-old was outstanding for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men towards the end of the last campaign, a huge part of the Scottish Cup win and Europa League final run. But performances like that usually attract attention and Bassey has been the subject of fervent transfer speculation ever since.

Ferguson would like to see him stay in Glasgow for now to continue to develop and improve upon certain facets of his game.

And he expects the club to do all they can to ensure that happens.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, the former Kelty Hearts and Alloa boss said: “I’d chain him up.

“Anything just to make sure he doesn’t leave.

“Last year I was in awe of him, I’ve got to be honest with you.

“Some of the performances he puts in and he’s still got a bit to learn, he’s still got a bit to go.

“But he’s got everything you want as a modern day defender. He can play a number of positions, he can play left-back, he can play left wing-back and he can play left of a three or left of a two.”

Question marks remain over the future of a number of other key players – most notably Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo who all are entering the last year of their contracts.

Fergie has also assessed their valuations given the contract situation.
