Everton of England midfielder, Alex iwobi was back in the spotlight on Tuesday, as he notched home a goal for The Toffees in their Carabao Cup victory, megasportsarena.com reports.
Iwobi’s goal was the pick of the pack in an array of top performances by Nigerian players, as Adebayo Akinfenwa also scored, while the Chukwuemeka brothers, Caleb and Carney sapped spots on the pitch.
While Akinfenwa scored for Wycombe Wanderers and the Chukwuemeka siblings were in action with Aston Villa, Iwobi was one of two players that retained spots in Everton’s starting line-up, as The Toffees qualified into the third round with a 2-1 win over English Championship outfit, Huddersfield Town.
Iwobi opened scoring with a simple finish from eight yards out, with an assist by Tom Davies and, though it was cancelled out by Tom Lees’ header on the stroke of half-time, Andros Townsend fired The Toffees back in front with 11 minutes remaining.
Akinfenwa and his teammates from Wycombe joined Everton in the next round, as his goal helped them get victory over Stevenage, but the game had to go into penalties’ shootout after a 2-2 draw in regulation time at Lamex Stadium.
Making his first start of the season, Akinfenwa slotted home after a deflection in the 23rd minute, after which Elliott List and Jamie Reid also scored to put the home team 2-1 up before Tjay De Barr headed home in second half injury time to send the game to penalties.
On the other hand, a simpler and easier tale unfolded for Caleb and Carney Chukwuemeka at Dunes Hotel Stadium, as Aston Villa hammered English League Two side, Barrow 6-0.
After two appearances off the bench, 17-year-old Carney made his starting debut in Villa’s midfield and lasted 73 minutes on the pitch before making way for his older brother, Caleb, who only arrived at Villa Park last week.
Tuesday night’s clash was Caleb’s first appearance for Villa, who secured a big win courtesy of a hat-trick from Cameron Archer, Anwar El Ghazi’s brace and Frederic Guilbert’s effort.
