Arsenal and Manchester United were mentioned as the two Premier League clubs interested in signing Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji at the start of the month and the player looks set for a move, reports Megasportsarena.com.
Interested clubs in England are willing to pay up to £21 million to sign him.
European football is set return to the Emirates next season, the Gunners are currently fourth in the Premier League table, and a win in their last two games will send them through to the group stages of the Champions League next term.
Even if they let Spurs get ahead of them, they will be in the Europa League. That means Arsenal will have to bolster the numbers in their squad – not just in attack and midfield, but in central defence as well.
Arsenal currently have Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes and Rob Holding as their options at the back. That’s simply not enough, which is probably why they are looking at Akanji.
Akanji, who has been branded as ‘outstanding’ by Stephane Henchoz, will enter the final year of his contract this summer. He has no plans of continuing his stay at the Westfalenstadion beyond the end of this season, and he wants to follow his good pal Haaland to the Premier League.
