Chelsea of England striker, Tammy Abraham has received words of assurance from The Blues’ coach, Frank Lampard, that the Nigerian-born youngster will remain relevant in the scheme of things at Stamford Bridge, despite the impending arrival of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig of Germany, megasportsarena.com reports.
Abraham could now relax a little, as an updated report out of Queensland revealed that he will remain in Lampard’s plans even after Werner’s arrival, because the in-form lad from Leipzig is not being considered as a direct replacement for the England international.
This assertion has been raised in an analysis by British tabloid, The Mirror, which added that the only reason why Werner is moving to Stamford Bridge is because Lampard has been desperate to add more firepower to his line-up, which the £52m Germany forward will help him achieve.
However, while noting that Werner will bring fresh impact into Chelsea’s attack, the report also acknowledged that it means Abraham could decide of what happens to his long-term future as The Blues’ top striker and the coming days would determine what choices he makes.
The report adds: “Abraham has enjoyed an encouraging debut season as Chelsea’s first-choice centre-forward this term. Emboldened by the faith shown in him by Frank Lampard after a fine season on loan at Aston Villa, he has struck 15 times in 34 games in all competitions so far.
“Thirteen of those have arrived in 25 Premier League games. However, cutting deeper, seven of those 13 arrived in a three-match spell in September, with back-to-back braces against Norwich and Sheffield United followed by a hat-trick against an unusually unsettled Wolves defence.
“Since then, Abraham has scored just six times in 1700 league minutes (20 matches). Before the Premier League’s suspension, he had bagged just once in six games in 2020. Overall, according to Wyscout , he averages a league goal every 162 minutes, with his expected goals total standing at 14.2.
“His goals per 90 minutes stands at 0.57 which ranks him joint-eight in the Premier League this term – adjusted for players who have played over 1000 minutes – level with Liverpool’s Sadio Mane and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Sergio Aguero sets the bar at 0.97, with the league’s top scorer, Jamie Vardy, second on 0.72.
“Lampard didn’t court the opinions of his forward line as a move for Werner was plotted by himself and club bosses, but he has made no secret of his desire to add extra cutting edge to his young side this year. After seeing a host of chances squandered in an FA Cup win over Hull City in February he spoke out at the profligacy of his side.
“Then he went public once more with his desire to add greater goal threat after witnessing Bayern kill off his side’s Champions League last 16 tie in the second half of the first leg at Stamford Bridge. No-one other than Abraham has hit double figures in the Premier League, while second top-scorer Willian is departing this summer when his contract ends.
“Thirty-one goals have followed thus far (from Werner), 10 more than his previous best total. His arrival is designed for him to dovetail with Abraham – who Lampard projects for further improvement next term – adding more decisive goal threat to the Blues attack.
“Lampard will hope that he embraces the challenge. Abraham outwardly appeared to do so on social media over the weekend, joining teammate Kepa Arrizabalaga in liking a social media post with regards Werner’s transfer.”
