A total of 12 players are set to be decamped from the Nigeria’s women’s under-17 national team, following their inability to impress the technical crew led by assistant coach, Abimbola Olowookre, megasportsarena.com gathered.
The ejected players, from an initial 39 that were officially invited to camp in Abuja at the start of this month, will be dropped, to make way for other players to try their talents out, ahead of the team’s upcoming game against Guinea in the qualifiers for the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup billed to hold in India.
All players will be newly invited will also be expected to step up their efforts and jostle with those retained in the battle for shirts ahead of the Flamingos’ first match in the African qualifiers first round first leg fixture billed for March 1st in Conakry, Guinea.
Olowookere said he will invite more players, to not only help Nigeria defeat Guinea home and away but to also go all the way in picking the World Cup ticket, hence his decision to send away those who did not measure up to standard.
Those to be dropped from the Flamingos’ camp at the close of training on Wednesday had many chances to prove their mettle, starting with a test game, in which the team defeated Mees Football Academy of Abuja 3-2 at FIFA Goal Project last Saturday.
They then continued with two training sessions every day, in a bid to maximize time left before the clash with Guinea, as Olowookere stressed that he wants to prevent a repeat of the last time out, when Cameroon knocked Nigeria out in the second round of the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, which stopped the Flamingos’ from making it to the finals in Uruguay.
