Why Calvin Bassey Missed Out On  Football Awards In Scotland

0

A lot of questions have been asked about Calvin Bassey’s omission from the PFA YPOTY when Aberdeen’s Connor Barron got a nomination. Barron has just 8 SPL appearances, while Bassey of course has 26, and that excludes the UEL appearances.

Megasportsarena.com reports that a lot of fans slated the PFA for this one, when of course there are two aspects supporters failed to realise.

First, PFA is voted by the players not the directors, fans, writers or sponsors, but by fellow professionals. Generally, they can be trusted to vote the right players.

Secondly, and even more tellingly, Bassey was ineligible.

Problem is you have to be 20 when the voting takes place, and the lad wasn’t. The Nigerian defender is 22, having turned that in December.

There’s a reason it’s called young player, and not player – basically anyone 21 or over is now in the seniors, and it appears he fell short there too with his fellow pros.

So, that’s why he wasn’t in Young Player Of The Year, and clearly his fellow professionals don’t rate him enough yet to put him among the seniors. Mind you, they didn’t rate any other Rangers players either.
