Chelsea of England defender, Fikayo Tomori has finally signed a contract extension at Stamford Bridge, as part of the reward for his breakthrough season with The Blues, but it is coming just few months after the London club almost sold him to English Premier League rivals, Everton, megasportsarena.com learnt.
Information out of Queensland indicates that top shots at Stamford Bridge were initially toying with the idea of another loan deal for the Nigerian-born stopper, who spent the whole of last term in a similar deal with Derby County in the English Championship, but they opted to take a gamble on keeping him in their main team, which has paid off awesomely.
While Tomori he has set his feet on solid ground, Everton continue struggling for form in the EPL, such that Chelsea’s top brass are thankful of their decision to retain him and subsequently offered him terms of a new deal, which was finally sealed, signed and delivered on Thursday.
A report by goal.com reveals that a deal for Tomori at Everton had all been settled and almost sealed, until David Luiz decided to quit Stamford Bridge and join Chelsea’s London rivals, Arsenal on summer transfer deadline day.
While Tomori has gone on to excel under his former handler at Derby, Frank Lampard, things could have been different for him this season had Chelsea not been forced to offload Luiz in August, and The Blues had to look towards the rejected stone as the head of the corner.
Tomori has now grown from strength to strength under Lampard this season, having impressed under the ex-midfielder at Derby last term, and the dark-skinned central defender is now at the height of contract extension talks with The Blues, as reports out of Stamford Bridge indicate that officials have reached a crescendo in talks with the defender’s agent.
Despite a recent bout with injury, Tomori is already highly-rated in only his first full season with Chelsea, who previously loaned him to Brighton, Hull City and Derby, but he has hit the ground running with the opportunity of finally making his mark in the main team, and The Blues are now very to tying him down to a new, improved contract.
This all follows on the heels of a truly edifying breakthrough season for Tomori, in which the lad with Nigeria and Canadian nationality, but chose to play for England at senior level, has emerged as a genuine first-team player this season, during which he has already made 16 appearances for The Blues across all competitions, sequel to profound trust from Lampard.
Tomori first showed signs of maturity playing last season on loan at Derby, with Lampard then in charge of the English Championship side, such that the gel between them has helped him settle in the English Premier League, and The Blues are making a concerted effort to tie him down and reward the England stopper with a new contract, after undergoing talks for several months.
