Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons will on Friday step out with a new captain for the first of two international friendlies with current Olympic Games women football champions, Canada, megasportsarena.com reports.
The Falcons head into the first of back-to-back exhibition matches away to the Canadians on Friday in Vancouver, before playing them again two days later in Victoria City, but Barcelona Femeni of Spain attacker, Asisat Oshoala will not be Nigeria’s skipper on the night.
This is sequel to reports that the four-time African Women Footballer of The Year is not available to continue her role as Falcons’ captain, owing to fitness issues.
The report out of Nigeria’s camp in the north of Canada affirmed that on the team’s American coach, Randy Waldrum has named veteran defender, Onome Ebi as captain for the upcoming matches.
However, an additional hint has emerged that ‘Super Zee’ will not return to her role as skipper even when she rejoins the team in future, owing to pressure that has been mounted on Waldruim to change his captain altogether.
A top official hinted that the decision was taken in connection with Oshoala’s drop in form during recent international duties, as against her fiery form while in action for Barca.
The official told SportNewsAfrica: “We have no issue whatsoever with Asisat but thoughts of stripping her of the armband came after Aisha Buhari Cup last September.
“This is not for anything negative but for troubling concerns of seeing her struggle in national team colours.
“We and the coach observed the captaincy is weighing her down and affecting her play.
“With or without it, we believe she is a true professional player and should not struggle to prove otherwise by delivering on the pitch.”
