Montreal Impact of Canada striker, Sunusi Ibrahim has become the second foreign-based player to join the Super Eagles’ camp ahead of Saturday’s international friendly with Mexico, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although the initial plan by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was to line out a full squad of home-based players for the game in Los Angeles, USA, injuries and club commitments have accounted for the absence of some key players, thereby leaving room open for previously uninvited lads to get a look in.
First to get a hasty call-up was Tottenham Hotspur of England youth team goalkeeper, Joshua Oluwayemi, who replaced injured Heartland of Owerri shot-stopper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, and the latest to join the Nigerian camp is Sunusi.
It is not the first time the former 36 Lion FC of Lagos and Nasarawa United of Lafia buzzing forward will join the national team’s camp, as Sunusi had been part of the ill-fated Eagles’ B-squad that failed to qualify for the 2020 Championship of African Nations (CHAN).
It is, therefore, a reunion with familiar colleagues from the home front, as Sunusi was top scorer in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) with 10 goals across 22 games in 2019, while he was still at Nasarawa United, which shot him into instant stardom.
The 18-year-old stocky player, who drew controversy when he was invited to the under-17 national team, Golden Eaglets but eventually starred for the Olympic Eagles at the 2019 African U23 Cup of Nations, has so far played six games for Montreal in USA’s Major League Soccer (MLS).
Two of the game he has played have been in the starting line-up of his club and logged a total of 216 minutes, so soon after he completed an off-season transfer to the Canada-based side in January 2021 after undergoing trials with Watford of England.
