Former Super Eagles’ striker Shola Ameobi is making a strong case for the retention of former Manchester United star Steve Bruce as the coach of one of his former clubs Newcastle United as he believes the gaffer has done enough to justify a contract extension, megasportsarena.com reports.
The advent of new investors from Saudi Arabia at Saint James’ Park has raised speculation that Bruce will be brushed aside, to make way for a big-name coach, with former Tottenham Hotspur tactician, Mauricio Pochettino now top of the list of possible gaffers heading to take over at the Toon, but Ameobi is arguing for a retention of the status quo.
The Magpies’ long-serving legend, who was with Nigeria’s squad to Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup, stressed that he wants to see Bruce remain in charge even after the club is sold, following confirmation that a £300m Saudi Arabia-backed deal could be completed within seven days.
Ameobi submitted: “I think Steve Bruce has done a terrific job here with what he’s had to work with. I’m definitely a guy who doesn’t want to make rash decisions. I think for me Steve is a manager who’s very experienced, for me, my advice would be to stay with what we have. I would be calling for the new owners not to make any rash decisions.
“Definitely if a new owner comes in they’ll want to know how the club runs and want to know what they’ve got in the club. It would be important to give stability to what we have here. Then moving forward you can make decisions once you know what it’s about and off the back of that start making the changes as and how they see fit.”
