Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly interested in signing Michael Ihiekwe on a free transfer this summer, Megasportsarena.com understands.
Ihiekwe has been on the books with Rotherham United since 2017, making 184 appearances. The centre-back has returned 14 goals in that period of time for the Millers, whilst also having a loan with Accrington Stanley in 2018/19.
However, the 29-year-old is out of contract now at Rotherham and there’s uncertainty surrounding his future.
There’s an offer on the table for Ihiekwe to remain with Rotherham, yet he’s not agreed on those terms and, as things stand, he will become a free agent on July 1st.
Ihiekwe made 52 appearances across all competitions last season for Rotherham, scoring five goals. His form in League One helped Paul Warne’s side to second in the table, sealing automatic promotion and a route back into the Championship.
There’s no denying that Sheffield Wednesday need centre-back reinforcements.
Hutchinson and Dunkley moving on, plus Dean and Storey heading back to their parent clubs, leaves Wednesday’s squad depleted in the heart of defence.
The interest in Ihiekwe makes complete sense and, you’ve got to say, landing the 29-year-old’s signature would be a coup given he’s going to have a Championship opportunity with Rotherham.
