Former Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest winger, Saammy Ameobi could be on his way back Middlesbrough at the start of next month, following reports that the club that once had Yakubu Aiyegbeni, John Mikel Obi and Kenneth Omeruo on their cards have opened talks to sign him.
Megasportsarena.com gathered that it is bound to be a revival of fortune for the younger brother of former Super Eagles’ striker, Shola Ameobi, as the new opening comes less than a month after he was sent packing by Nottingham.
A report by Football Insider adds that, though the younger Ameobi was released by Forest at the end of last season, he may not have to wait too long before getting another base, and it could jolly well be at one of his former clubs.
This is sequel to a hint that Boro are already working on a deal to sign him, as they seek offensive reinforcements and make up for the likely exit of Chuba Akpom this summer, while Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletcher have been released.
That has opened the way for a return to The Riverside for Ameobi, who, in 81 appearances for Forest across two seasons, managed to score only eight goals and provided 11 assists.
The underachieving former Nigeria youth international, who has also previously played for Bolton Wanderers and Cardiff City, earlier spent part of the 2012/13 season on loan at Boro, with a goal and an assist to show in nine matches.
Dramatically, he could join Akpom at Middlesbrough, should the former Arsenal lad decide not to leave, while the club have also been linked with a move for Uche Ikpeazu, another attack-minded Nigerian player, who wants to leave relegated Wycombe Wanderers and avoid playing in England’s third-tier division, League One.
