West Bromwich Albion’s Nigerian-born striker, Hal Robson-Kanu scored on the last day of the season in the English Premier League, but it could not changed the tale of a very disappointing campaign, as The Baggies, who also had Semi Ajayi on for 90 minutes, fell to Leeds United.
Megasportsarena.com reports that Ajayi and Robson-Kanu went out with their teammates in search of a consolation result, for their relegation to the English Championship that was confirmed three weeks earlier, but the day ended in agony for them and their fans.
Such was the agony for Ajayi (who got six points out of ten) and Robson-Kanu (with seven marks on the cards), as Leeds ended their return to the English Premier League in style by beating their already-relegated visitors 3-1 on Sunday.
Driven on by the return of more than 8,000 raucous fans at Elland Road, Leeds tore into their opponents right from the off, with Jack Harrison netting after just seven minutes – only for the goal to be ruled out for offside against Rodrigo in the buildup.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side deservedly led 2-0 at half-time thanks to Rodrigo’s bullet header and Kalvin Phillips’s cheeky free-kick, before Robson-Kanu hopped off the visitors’ bench in search of damage control.
The hosts then introduced top-scorer Patrick Bamford at the break, with the striker adding a third from the spot with 11 minutes to go, before Robson-Kanu’s netted a last-minute consolation for Sam Allardyce in his final game in charge of West Brom.
Leeds ended the season in style with four straight wins – the club’s best top-flight run in 19 years – to finish ninth in the table, while the 19th-placed Baggies drop down to the Championship on the back of four defeats in a row.
The visitors did have time for a late consolation after a rare mistake by Phillips, who miscontrolled Liam Cooper’s pass to present Robson-Kanu with a clear run on goal which the substitute gratefully accepted.
