Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt will make history this Saturday as the first Nigerian female football side to step out in competitive continental action, when they take on Hassacas Queens of Ghana in a CAF Women’s Champions League zonal qualifier.
The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) champions are in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire for the competition tagged West African Football Union B (UFOA B), whey they will face Hasaacas in their opening group game at the 10,000 capacity Stade Robert Champroux de Marcory.
Megasportsarena.com gathered that the game, which will start at 8pm Nigeria time is another opportunity for The Jewel of Rivers to set fresh marks in the women’s game, after they won the NWFL Super Six championship in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State in May.
They are one of six clubs in the UFOA B region that will slug it out in the West African nation for two slots at the maiden CAF Women’s Champions League, ahead of which the team coached by former Super Falcons’ handler, Edwin Okon flew into Abidjan on Thursday.
The Garden City outfit, who are camped at Hotel Nouvelle Pergola du Abidjan, quickly settled down and had a light workout in the premises of the edifice, after which they had their first feel of the stadium on Friday evening, some 24 hours before their opening game on Saturday.
The UFOA B six-team tournament will run from Saturday, July 24 to Thursday, August 5, after which both finalists in Abidjan with represent the WAFU Zone B at the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League in Egypt later in the year.
