Barcelona Femeni of Spain attacker, Asisat Oshoala has declared that she was happy to go home with an individual gong as Nigeria’s top female football player of the moment, in what was a major highlight at an event organised by the country’s soccer governing body.
Megasportsarena.com reports that the event, which held on Monday in Lagos, was the third edition of the national awards staged by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and Racing Genk of Belgium attacker, Paul Ebere Onuachu went home with the male equivalent.
Also honoured alongside Oshoala at Eko Hotels, Victoria Island, Lagos were several legends of female football in the country, led by the set of USA 1999 that made Nigeria proud in reaching the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, where they lost to Brazil by a golden goal.
They were joined by Silas Nwankwo and Charles Atshimene, who shared the Best Performance of the Year award for male home-based players, while Gift Monday won the Best Performance of the Year for female stars in the domestic league.
Oshoala collected the Best Performance of the Year for overseas-based female players, having enjoyed a terrific trophy-laden season with Barcelona, which she helped win the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Primera División and Copa de la Reina.
