Omeruo Sets Sight On AFCON 2021 Round Of 16, Okoye Sues For Caution

Leganes of Spain defender, Kenneth Omeruo is sounding upbeat about Nigeria’s chances of reaching the knock-out stage of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, but Sparta Rotterdam of Netherlands goalkeeper, Emil Maduka Okoye is suing for caution.

Megasportsarena.com reports that, although Omeruo believes the Eagles look good enough to reach the round of 16 with victory over Sudan on Saturday, Okoye predicted that it will be a tough game, but enthused that the Nigerian side would eventually emerge with three points.

The former Fortuna Dusseldorf of Germany shot-stopper stressed that it will be a physical battle that could weigh the Eagles down, unless they keep their feet on the throttle in order to win their second straight group game at the 2021 AFCON.

Nigeria made a statement of intent by beating seven-time champions Egypt in their opener on Tuesday, after which Sudan and Guinea-Bissau played out a goalless draw, which makes Okoye less worrisome, as he also expressed confidence in the Eagles’ ability to again win on Saturday.

Okoye told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN): “I think it’s going to be more of a physical game but we have enough quality so I’m sure we will get the job done.”

Nigeria have won five of their last six matches against Sudan and are overwhelming favourites to win on Saturday, but Omeruo agreed with Okoye that it will be a tough encounter and urged his teammates not to lose focus as they target the round of 16 with a game to spare.

Omeruo concluded: “We will take the match serious, it is a good start for us but we shouldn’t lose focus to think the next game will be easy, we have to win the next game so we can be sure of the next round.”
