Stoke City of England midfielder, John Mikel Obi is relishing the victory over his former club, Chelsea over Real Madrid of Spain in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, megasportsarena.com reports.
Although Mikel left Stamford Bridge in a storm after ten successful years at the London-based English Premier League club, the former Super Eagles’ captain said he is happy seeing Chelsea reach the UCL final once again.
The team he helped win the same title in 2012 set up an all-English final against Manchester City by beating the competition’s most successful club 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, and Mikel disclosed that he was truly excited seeing The Blues consolidate on the 1-1 draw they got from the first leg.
With Faustino Anjorin absent in Chelsea’s line-up and Marvin Akinlabi left out of Madrid’s squad, there was no Nigerian player to follow in this game, but Mikel took delight in seeing Timo Werner give his former club the lead in the 28th minute after Kai Havertz saw his effort come off the crossbar and Mason Mount wrapped up the victory five minutes from time.
Mikel, who earlier revealed that his most memorable match with Chelsea was the 2012 UCL final victory over Bayern Munich of Germany, was delighted with The Blues’ progress to the ultimate game against Man City at Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey on May 29.
The Nigerian icon, Mikel, who played 59 UCL games for the London side, with two goals to his name, was among those who reacted after The Blues stated on social media: “CHAMPIONS. LEAGUE. FINALISTS! 😍 #ChampionsLeague #CFC #Chelsea;” a post has been liked by over 430,000 fans and followers.
